Government to Enhance Snakebite Treatment Facilities at PHCs: Minister Singhal
- The Assam government plans to expand snakebite treatment facilities at the Primary Health Centre (PHC) level, ensuring wider availability of anti-snake venom (ASV) based on case load and feasibility.
- Health Minister Ashok Singhal informed the Assam Assembly that doctors and healthcare staff in designated hospitals will receive specialized training before the expansion of ASV distribution.
- From April to December last year, 32 snakebite-related deaths were recorded in the state, while no such fatalities have been reported this year until March 5, according to government data.
- The minister emphasized that snakebite treatment at PHCs can be challenging, as some patients may experience severe allergic reactions to ASV, requiring ICU and ventilator support.
- Critical cases will be referred to higher medical facilities equipped to handle such emergencies.
