Why in News?

  • The Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Jyotiraditya Scindia, has initiated high-level engagements with leading industrialists ahead of the Rising Northeast Investment Summit 2025, scheduled for May 23–24. These efforts aim to attract substantial investments and foster sustainable development across the eight northeastern states of India.

  • Strategic Engagements:

    • Minister Scindia met with prominent industry leaders, including Mukesh Ambani (Reliance Industries), Kumar Mangalam Birla (Aditya Birla Group), and N. Chandrasekaran (Tata Sons), to discuss investment opportunities in the Northeast region.

  • Public-Private Partnerships (PPP):

    • Emphasis was placed on the role of PPPs in accelerating sustainable development, with discussions on integrating the eight northeastern states into a unified growth strategy.

  • Institutional Framework:

    • The Ministry of DoNER has initiated the formation of a High-Level Task Force comprising the Chief Ministers of all eight northeastern states.

    • Establishment of Investment Promotion Agencies (IPAs) in each state to streamline investment processes and facilitate investor engagement.

  • Focus Sectors:

    • Key sectors identified for investment include agro-based industries, textiles, and tourism, leveraging the region’s unique resources and cultural heritage.

  • Infrastructure Development:

    • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved a ₹22,864 crore greenfield high-speed corridor project connecting Mawlyngkhung in Meghalaya to Panchgram in Assam.

    • The 166.80 km corridor (144.80 km in Meghalaya and 22 km in Assam) aims to enhance connectivity and spur economic development, particularly in the cement and coal production areas of Meghalaya.
