Assam Government Launches ₹3,200 Crore Initiative to Empower Women

  • Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the Mukhya Mantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyaan (MMUA) is the state’s second-largest women empowerment initiative after Orunodoi.
  • This scheme is open to women from both rural and urban areas, with the government allocating ₹3,200 crores for its implementation.
  • Under MMUA, women will receive individual loans from the government, addressing the gap where banks primarily offer loans to self-help groups (SHGs) but not to individuals.
  • The initiative aims to support both group and personal entrepreneurial efforts.
  • Financial assistance under MMUA will be provided in phases:
    • First installment: ₹10,000
    • Second installment: ₹25,000 (50% from the state government, 50% from banks under credit guarantee schemes)
    • Third year: Loans up to ₹50,000, with a maximum limit of ₹85,000.
  • The scheme ensures financial inclusion and promotes women’s entrepreneurship by enabling them to access credit independently.
