Assam Accepts Ration Cards for Free College Admissions

Why in News?

  • In a significant move to ease the admission process for economically disadvantaged students, Assam’s Education Minister, Dr. Ranoj Pegu, announced that ration cards will now be accepted as valid proof of income for availing free admission in government and provincialised educational institutions across the state.

Important Key Points:

  • Simplified Documentation:
Students from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families can now present their family’s ration card as proof of income, eliminating the need for income certificates issued by competent authorities. This change aims to streamline the admission process and reduce bureaucratic hurdles.

  • Continued Validity of Income Certificates:
While ration cards are now accepted, income certificates remain valid and can be used interchangeably, providing flexibility to applicants.

  • Expanded Eligibility:
Earlier this year, the Assam government increased the annual income eligibility cap for the free admission scheme from ₹2 lakh to ₹4 lakh, broadening the initiative’s reach.

  • Impact Statistics:
According to official figures, over 71% of the 1.66 lakh students who took admissions in various colleges across Assam in 2024 benefited from the scheme. Specifically, 1,18,199 students availed free admission under the updated guidelines.
