Why in News?

  • The old Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) is being demolished to pave the way for a 3,000-bed ultra-modern hospital, aiming to transform Guwahati into a regional healthcare hub for the Northeast.

Important Key Points:

  • Demolition of Old GMCH:
    The old Gauhati Medical College Hospital will be demolished to make space for a new 3,000-bed hospital.

  • One of India’s Largest Hospitals:
    Once completed, the new GMCH complex will have a total capacity of 5,000 beds, making it the second-largest hospital in India after Patna.

  • Inauguration of Three New Hospitals:
    Recently inaugurated hospitals include:

    • Pragjyotishpur Hospital

    • Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH)

    • Mother & Child Hospital (to open by October-end)

  • MMCH Upgradation:
    MMCH will be upgraded into a Super Speciality Hospital, enabling advanced surgeries including liver and kidney transplants.

  • Proton Beam Therapy at GMCH:
    GMCH will be the third location in India (after Chennai and Mumbai) to offer proton beam therapy, a high-precision cancer treatment.

    • The machine costs Rs. 500 crore.

  • State Government Vision:
    The initiative aligns with the Assam government’s goal to make Guwahati a healthcare hub with enhanced infrastructure and modern treatments for the Northeast and beyond.
