Assam Gears Up to Operationalise 10 More Co-Districts by August

Why in News?

  • The Government of Assam is set to operationalize 10 additional co-districts by August 11, 2025, as part of its ongoing initiative to decentralize administration and bring governance closer to the people. This move follows the successful launch of 39 co-districts in 2024 and aims to enhance administrative efficiency across the state.

Important Key Points:

  • New Co-Districts Identified: The 10 co-districts slated for operationalization are: Boko-Chaygaon, Palashbari, Barchalla, Rangapara, Makum, Digboi, Teok, Mariani, Dholai, and Dudhnoi. This will bring the total number of functional co-districts to 49 out of the proposed 78.

  • Administrative Directives: Chief Secretary Dr. Ravi Kota chaired a high-level review meeting with senior officials from key departments, including Personnel, Revenue, PWD (Building), Finance, and General Administration. The meeting focused on assessing preparedness for the rollout, emphasizing the readiness of temporary offices, finalization of permanent headquarters, staff deployment, training, infrastructure development, and issuance of consolidated government orders.

  • Objective of Co-Districts: The co-district initiative aims to decentralize governance by creating administrative units equivalent to districts, thereby reducing the burden on parent districts. Co-district commissioners will have magisterial powers and administrative control over various departments, facilitating efficient delivery of government services, including land revenue matters, development works, welfare schemes, and disaster management.
