Bhutan’s Railway Vision Becomes Reality with Kokrajhar-Gelephu Line

Indian Railways is set to establish Bhutan’s first railway link, connecting Assam’s Kokrajhar to Gelephu, as the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) finalizes the Detailed Project Report (DPR). A spokesperson confirmed that the final location survey has been completed, and the DPR awaits approval. The proposed 69.04 km railway line, with an estimated cost of ₹3,500 crore, will feature six stations—Balajan, Garubhasa, Runikhata, Shantipur, Dadgiri, and Gelephu. The project includes extensive infrastructure, such as two key bridges, 29 major bridges, 65 minor bridges, one road overbridge, 39 road underbridges, and two viaducts. This initiative aims to enhance Indo-Bhutan relations by boosting trade, tourism, and cultural exchange while significantly improving connectivity for Bhutan.
