Cabinet Approves 50-Member Committee for Bhupen Hazarika Centenary Celebrations
Why in News?
- The Assam State Cabinet announced plans to celebrate the birth centenary of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, a legendary music maestro, with year-long events and initiatives beginning on September 8, 2025. The government also approved the creation of 10 new co-districts in Assam.

Centenary Celebration Committee:
A 50-member committee will be formed under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to oversee the year-long celebration of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s birth centenary. -
Involvement of Northeast CM’s:
All Northeast Chief Ministers will be invited as patrons of the committee. -
National and Regional Events:
Central programs will be organized in Guwahati, New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Arunachal Pradesh. The President and Prime Minister will be invited to the opening and closing ceremonies. -
Dr. Hazarika’s Legacy:
One infrastructure project or institution will be named after Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. The central government will be requested to launch a commemorative coin in his honor. -
Biographies and Documentary:
The state government will distribute 10 lakh biographies of Dr. Hazarika, with one to be placed in every library across the country. A documentary will also be made in English, Assamese, and Hindi. -
Events in Educational Institutions:
Various events will be organized in educational institutions throughout the year to honor Dr. Hazarika’s contributions. -
Creation of 10 Co-Districts:
The State Cabinet approved the formation of 10 new co-districts, which include Boko-Chayygoan, Palasbari, Borsola, Rangapara, Makum, Digboi, Teok, Mariani, Dholai, and Dudhnoi.
