Why in News?

  • Assamese swimmer Elvis Ali Hazarika is preparing to make history by attempting an ice swim in Antarctica, aiming to become the first Asian to achieve this formidable feat. If successful, he will join an elite group of only 54 swimmers worldwide who have braved the frigid Antarctic waters, where temperatures plunge below freezing.

Important Key Points:

  • Global Milestone: Hazarika’s successful swim would make him the 37th male swimmer globally to complete an Antarctic ice swim, a testament to his exceptional endurance and determination.

  • Rigorous Training Regimen: To prepare, Hazarika plans to undergo two months of intensive training in the UK, acclimating to waters at 4–5°C. This will be followed by a one-and-a-half-month acclimatization period in Antarctica itself. The entire expedition is estimated to cost between ₹40–50 lakh.

  • Physical and Mental Fortitude: The endeavor poses significant risks, including frostbite and snow blindness. Hazarika is advised to condition his body by taking ice baths and holding ice until it melts, ensuring he can function under freezing conditions.

  • Spiritual Motivation: Expressing his spiritual drive, Hazarika stated, “If I can undertake this journey with the blessings of Maa Kamakhya, it will be the biggest achievement of my life.”
