Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme of India (GHCI)
Why in News?
- India has officially launched the Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme of India (GHCI) under the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM). This initiative aims to establish a standardized framework for certifying green hydrogen production, ensuring transparency, traceability, and market credibility.
Important Key Points:
-
Objective: The GHCI seeks to define and standardize what qualifies as green hydrogen in India, facilitating the development of a credible market and promoting the country’s export competitiveness in the green hydrogen economy.
-
Emission Threshold: Hydrogen can be officially recognized as “green” only if its non-biogenic greenhouse gas emissions do not exceed 2 kg of CO₂ equivalent per kg of hydrogen, averaged over 12 months.
-
Certification Process: Producers must undergo a certification process involving third-party verification bodies accredited by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE). These bodies will independently verify that the hydrogen meets India’s green hydrogen standards.
-
Global Engagement: India has signed agreements to supply 4.12 lakh tonnes of green hydrogen derivatives to Japan and Singapore, highlighting the country’s commitment to becoming a global hub for green hydrogen.
