Report Released:
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI) published the Women and Men in India 2024 report. ( Click on the link to read the Publication ) -
Sex Ration at Birth:
Between 2014–16 and 2018–20, the sex ratio in urban areas (910) surpassed that of rural areas (907), reflecting an increase in female migration to urban regions. -
Health Sector:
Female life expectancy has improved, and maternal mortality rates have declined ( 122 in 2015-17 to 97 in 2018-20 ). -
Education Sector:
Girls’ enrollment in primary and secondary education is rising but gaps remain in higher education ( 84.7% for males and 70.3% for females in 2017). -
Employment Trends:
Female labour force participation (LPFR) is slowly increasing but remains much lower compared to men ( from 23.3% in 2017-18 to 41.7% in 2023-24 ). -
Political Participation:
More women are participating in governance, though their share in legislatures is still small. Female voter turnout has changed over the years, going up to 67.2% in 2019 but dropping slightly to 65.8% in 2024. -
Financial Inclusion & Leadership Roles:
Women own 39.2% of all bank accounts and make up 39.7% of total bank deposits. In companies, women held 28.7% of board seats in FY25, which is an increase from 26.7% in FY20.

Economic Inequality:
Women continue to have less access to land, property, and formal credit. -
Government Efforts:
Various initiatives like Digital India, Skill India, and Stand-Up India are promoting women’s inclusion. -
Gender-Based Violence:
Cases of crimes against women are reported more, reflecting both awareness and challenges. About one-third (31.9%) of married women aged 18-49 in India face violence from their husbands, with the highest cases reported in Karnataka (48.4%), Bihar (42.5%), and Manipur (41.6%). -
Data Importance:
The report helps policymakers design better programs for gender equality and women’s empowerment.
