Why in News?

  • The workshop highlights Kaziranga’s efforts in biodiversity conservation and ecotourism through awareness programs. It promotes the educational engagement of students in environmental conservation. Launch of new trekking routes focused on butterflies, birds, and orchids marks a step toward sustainable tourism in the region.

Important Key Points:

  • A special workshop on butterflies and orchids was organized at Panbari Reserve Forest’s Bakori Range Office.

  • The event was an initiative by the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve Authority.

  • 54 students from various institutions like JDSG College, CNB College, Best Academy, Kaziranga Government Model College, Debraj Roy College, Kaliabor College, Gauhati University, and Arunachal College participated.

  • Dr Sonali Ghosh, Field Director of Kaziranga, delivered the welcome address.

  • Four booklets on orchids, butterflies, Panbari Reserve Forest, and birds were released during the inaugural session.

  • New butterfly, bird, and orchid trekking routes have been introduced for tourists in Panbari Reserve Forest.

  • Key dignitaries included:

    • Geetanjali Kalita (Superintendent)

    • Uttam Saikia (Environmental activist)

    • Dr Monsoon Jyoti Gogoi (Butterfly expert)

    • Khayanjit Gogoi (Orchid specialist)

    • Abhijit Gogoi (Tourism professional)

    • Gaurav Nandi Das (Butterfly researcher)

  • Interactive presentations were given:

    • On orchids by Khayanjit Gogoi (distribution, species, and climate influence).

    • On butterflies by Dr Monsoon Jyoti Gogoi (habitat, climate, challenges).

  • Students went on a field visit into the Panbari Reserve Forest in Gypsy vehicles.

  • At the Modarjuri forest camp, students observed various orchid species and their host trees.

  • The workshop concluded on Saturday.
