The number of loss-making State Public Sector Enterprises (SPSEs) in Assam increased from 11 in 2021-22 to 17 in 2022-23, as per a CAG report tabled in the State Assembly.
Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) and Assam Petrochemicals Limited (APL) accounted for 89% of the total losses, which amounted to ₹195.37 crore in 2022-23.
ASTC recorded the highest loss of ₹106.53 crore, primarily due to a decline in revenue from ₹165.05 crore (2021-22) to ₹80.20 crore (2022-23).
APL reported ₹67.36 crore in losses, mainly due to a rise in natural gas procurement costs and a drop in methanol prices in the international market.
The cost of input materials for APL surged from ₹28.97 crore to ₹96.14 crore in the same period.
Six loss-making SPSEs received budgetary support of ₹454.02 crore, with ₹380.13 crore allocated for employee salaries through equity, loans, and grants.
