Norwegian Ambassador Visits Nagaon to Review Development Projects & Agricultural Initiatives
Why in News?
- On April 26, 2025, Norwegian Ambassador to India, May-Elin Stener, along with Elisabeth Faure, Country Director of the World Food Programme (WFP), visited Nagaon district in Assam. The visit aimed to review ongoing development projects, particularly focusing on climate-resilient agriculture and women’s empowerment initiatives.

High-Level Delegation Visit:

Ambassador Stener and WFP Country Director Faure met with District Commissioner Narendra Kumar Shah and other senior officials at the Nagaon District Commissioner’s office to discuss the progress of various development projects.

Focus on Climate Resilience and Women’s Empowerment:

The delegation visited Jumurmur village in the Kathiatoli Development Block to assess the project titled “Enhancing Climate Resilience and Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture”. This initiative is a collaboration between the WFP, the Department of Agriculture and Horticulture, Government of Assam, supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and the Royal Norwegian Embassy.

Inauguration of Sustainable Farming Practices:

Ambassador Stener inaugurated an Integrated Farming System and the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) method of paddy cultivation. She interacted with women farmers engaged in these sustainable agricultural practices.

The delegation visited crop fields in Panigaon Putanimukh village under the Pakhimoria Development Block and a mushroom farm in Katahguri village under the Raha Development Block. They engaged with local farmers to understand the impact of these initiatives on the ground.
