Number of Schools in Assam Reduced to 44,743 Following Mergers: Minister Pegu

  • The number of schools in Assam declined from 44,826 in 2021-22 to 44,743 in 2023-24, as stated by Education Minister Ranoj Pegu in response to a query by Congress MLA Abul Kalam Rasheed Alam.
  • No schools have been closed recently; however, due to amalgamation, mergers, and other factors, some were relocated, with students continuing their education in nearby institutions.
  • According to UDISE data, Assam has 5,833 venture schools, of which 2,340 have fewer than 30 students.

The Education Department has proposed to the Finance Department the appointment of head teachers in 2,993 lower primary schools, as per the minister’s response to MLA Mazibur Rahman in the Assembly.
